The Landon Donovan transfer rumors just refuse to die. Will he? Won't he? And if so, with who?
Yes, as the midway point in Europe fast approaches, the speculation around America's biggest soccer star is quickly building to a fever pitch.
On Monday, Donovan was tied to Newcastle. Tuesday brings a fresh round of reports, with the latest in the Daily Mail, which is saying that Donovan is being pursued for a loan stint by none other than struggling London side, Fulham.
Dubbed "Fulhamerica" by some supporters for its willingness to sign U.S. players, the Cottagers represent an especially interesting option for Donovan, as fellow American star Clint Dempsey currently controls the attack for Fulham. The squad has also been hampered by injuries up front, most notably to Bobby Zamora and Moussa Dembele, so there would be room for Donovan to make meaningful contributions.
The drawback for Donovan is that Fulham is currently struggling, having managed just two wins in 17 matches played. But there is glory in helping a club stave off relegation, and it might be tempting for Donovan to do so in London next to two of his U.S. teammates (striker Eddie Johnson also plays for Fulham).
As with most reports this time of year, this latest rumor needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But it's certainly one worth watching, especially when it involves a coveted U.S. property like Mr. Donovan.
