The unidentified woman fled the room as Duke took hostages during Tuesday's meeting of the Bay City School Board in Panama City. An audiotape of the woman's 911 tape recounts the chilling moments as Duke leveled a gun at the five hostages and then fired at the school superintendent -- only narrowly missing him -- before taking his own life.
"There's some man here with a gun who came into the board meeting," the woman's fearful voice is heard telling the dispatcher. "He said, 'You fired my wife' and pulled out the gun."
Despite her obvious terror, the woman is able to give vital information to the dispatcher and describe the increasingly surreal scene.
"He said, 'You fired my wife,' took out a gun, took out some spray paint and spray-painted the wall. Most of us just ran out of the boardroom quickly but then he held the rest of them hostage," the woman tells the 911 operator. "He's got them hostage in the boardroom!"
The call takes a shocking turn as the woman sees Duke firing shots at Bay City School Superintendent Bill Husfelt and thinks he's been hit.
"Oh my gosh, he's firing. He's firing! He's firing. I don't know ... we need an ambulance. The superintendent's been shot," she says.
Husfelt was unharmed, but Duke later turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
