Yes, it's time once again to celebrate the quirky holiday dreamed up by the writers of "Seinfeld" that was celebrated by the Costanza family. Commemoration of the holiday, which falls on Dec. 23, consists of the following basic rituals:
- Erecting the aluminum Festivus pole: No decorations necessary.
- Gathering for a Festivus dinner: Meatloaf, no alcohol.
- The airing of grievances: Not dissimilar to conversation heard at other holiday gatherings.
- The feats of strength: Holiday wrestling competition.
While Festivus has grown in popularity in the years since "Seinfeld" aired its final episode in 1998, a growing chorus on the Internet is finding that the show's shelf-life is not exactly worth celebrating.
Is it the canned laughter? The cultural references that have come and gone, or that the influential show has been imitated so many times since it first became a hit that the format just seems tired?
Well, we'll always have Festivus, anyway.
