Jerome Taylor reportedly told cops that he attempted to hold up a Connecticut restaurant on Dec. 22 while armed with an iPhone.
Law enforcement officials say the 20-year-old suspect was wearing a mask when he entered the Northern Indian restaurant in New London Wednesday afternoon and demanded cash while holding what restaurant workers believed to be a gun, MSNBC.com reports.
Eatery owner and chef Dakpa "John" Norbu told NewLondon.Patch.com that he was in the kitchen around 4:20 p.m. preparing to open for dinner when the perp pulled out a small handgun.
"I grabbed my knife," he said. "And after that, he said, 'I'm just kidding.'"
The would-be robber apologized, saying he just needed cash for his child, then fled, according to police.
Investigators did not recover a gun or an iPhone, and Norbu said he would have recognized it had the perp been carrying the popular smart phone, because he owns one himself.
Taylor has been charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree robbery, criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny and interfering with police.
