Fantasy MVP and Value Pick of the Year
Michael Vick, QB, PHIThe Philadelphia quarterback received his first opportunity at rebuilding his name right away, as Kevin Kolb went down two quarters into the season. In just over a half of football, Vick would post what would be the first of nine 20-point efforts this season. Most weeks he was unstoppable, with his ascension to the top of the fantasy world complete after one of the best offensive days in history: 333 passing yards, 80 rushing yards, four passing TDs, two rushing TDs.
Incredibly, he led all players in fantasy points despite playing roughly 12 full games this season (he missed three weeks and played about half of two other games). Throwing out the two half-days, Vick only failed to score multiple TDs once all season.
Final stats: 3,018 passing yards, 21 passing TDs, 6 INTs, 676 rushing yards, 9 rushing TDs. Is there any doubt Vick is a top-five pick in next year's draft? He is the Fantasy MVP of 2010, the Waiver Pickup of the Century, perhaps, and the guy that led countless teams to titles.
Fantasy LVP
Randy Moss, WR, TEN/MIN/NEWhen a legitimate first-round receiver falls off the fantasy map over the second half of the season, it's usually due to injury. Not so with Moss. Let's take a trip down Memory Lane -- Moss owners, you can be excused.
He started the season in New England, where although he posted three straight subpar yardage totals to open up 2010, he did catch three TDs in three weeks. In the Patriots' Week 4 drubbing of the Dolphins, Moss saw just one target, and didn't record a catch.
He was then traded to Minnesota, where many expected a renaissance from Moss. He opened his 2010 tenure with the Vikings by catching four passes for 81 yards and a TD in Week 5. He posted mediocre yardage totals over the next two weeks, scoring a TD in Week 7. Lucky owners sold high. After a one-catch effort against the Patriots, Moss was surprisingly waived.
He surfaced in Tennessee, as the Titans were the only team to submit a waiver claim on the former star. Moss has rewarded the team with five catches in seven games. Five! Throw in his last game with the Vikings, and Moss has just six catches in his last eight games. Unreal.
I was lucky enough to win the FanHouse Fantasy League after drafting Moss in the first round. I was able to package him with Ahmad Bradshaw and Joe Flacco to get Ray Rice and Ben Roethlisberger. This was essentially the only thing he did to help me all season.
Fantasy Rookies of the Year
Mike Williams, WR, TB and LeGarrette Blount, RB, TBCo-rookies of the year? You bet. Neither was expected to be atop the rookie rankings at their positions at the beginning of the season. For Williams, injury claimed the rookie season of Dez Bryant and left him a clear shot at the crown. For Blount, he easily trumped a littany of bigger names at the running back position to earn this award.
Williams quickly established himself as the Buccaneers' go-to guy early in the offseason, and his consistency early on has been one reason why Josh Freeman has looked like a Pro Bowl quarterback this season. While Williams only has one 100-yard game this season, he has scored in nine different games, piling up 10 TDs this season, including three over the last two weeks at a time most critical for fantasy teams. If he totals 85 yards in the season finale, Williams will have a 1,000-yard, 10-TD rookie year on a team previously averse to throwing the ball much.
Blount started his season in Tennessee, but with the Titans feeling comfortable with just Javon Ringer backing up Chris Johnson, Blount wound up in Tampa Bay. If there was ever a place for a little-known talent to emerge in a backfield, it was Tampa Bay. With just injury-prone Cadillac Williams and fullback Earnest Graham to battle for carries, Blount quickly emerged as a fantasy force. He scored a TD in his first game against the Steelers in Week 3.
The Bucs gave Blount double-digit carries for the first time in Week 7, and he's had at least 13 carries per game since. Despite getting just 10 rushing attempts in the first five games of the season, Blount is only 59 yards away from reaching 1,000 rushing yards. Like Williams, he's excelled in the last two weeks, totaling 274 rushing yards and scoring a TD during the fantasy playoffs.
The best part of it all for the Buccaneers? Williams was a fourth-round pick, Blount an undrafted free agent picked up when Tennessee dropped the ball. Spending so little on two-thirds of a franchise's offense centerpiece (with Freeman) is almost unheard of.
