A 3-day-old baby girl died because her mother ate rat poison days before giving birth, police in Indiana said.

Indianapolis police are investigating the death as a homicide. They say the woman, 34-year-old Bei Bei Shuai, told friends she ingested the poison the night of Dec. 23, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press.

The friends helped Shuai check into a hospital, where a week later, on New Year's Eve, she gave birth to a daughter, Angel Shuai. But the baby died Jan. 3 from consuming rat poison, the Marion County coroner told police.

"It is a very unfortunate situation, very rare circumstances that someone would take rat poisoning in an attempt to either harm themselves or their unborn baby, Indianapolis police spokesman Kendale Adams told News6 in Indiana. Adams did not immediately return a call for comment today.

Shuai is undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, according to multiple news reports. She could be charged with feticide, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Shuai could not be reached for comment at the hospital.
