I'm still not sure why anyone -- millionaire or hobo -- would believe that former Duke star and NBAer Christian Laettner would know the first thing about real estate. But somehow NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman thought it would be good business to loan money to Laettner and sidekick Brian Davis' company, BD Ventures. In August, Merriman, a first-round pick of the Chargers in 2005, filed a lawsuit against BD Ventures for some $4 million. According to court documents, the loan was supposed to be fully repaid in March 2009.
In depositional testimony, Laettner said that "I know that we owe him money" and "we haven't been able to pay him." When asked why not, Laettner was frank: "Because there's not enough money available in the business to pay him back."
Well, the court has ruled in Merriman's favor, offering him $4 million.
"Shawne Merriman trusted Laettner and Davis to repay the millions they borrowed from him for their businesses," said Merriman's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz. "During the past two years, they first denied they owed the money and then made false promises they would repay Shawne. We are pleased that the Federal Court has vindicated Shawne's rights and is compelling Laettner and Davis to fulfill their obligations."
First a new contract from the Bills and now this. We're only five days into 2011 and it's already been a better year for Merriman than 2010.
