The attackers, who whacked Allen Haywood on the back of the head and then began pummeling him, appeared to be three children, about 11 or 12 years old. Many bystanders witnessed the assault, but Haywood says nobody tried to help. Instead, they were focused on filming the attack with cell phone cameras.
To add insult to injury, one of the attackers, a young girl, took the book Haywood had been reading and threw it onto the train tracks.
Haywood is understandably upset that no one tried to come to his aid, saying to the D.C. website TBD, "I can understand people not wanting to get physically involved. ... But nobody pressed the emergency button or went to the booth."
Luckily, Haywood received only minor injuries, including a cut lip and some bruising. The Metro Transit Police is investigating the incident.
