Crown Princess Mary, the 38-year-old wife of the heir to the throne, gave birth Saturday to twins -- a boy and a girl.
The boy was born at 10:40 a.m. and weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces. The girl arrived 26 minutes later and weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces.
Crown Prince Frederik, 42, was present at the births at Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet hospital and told reporters afterward that his Australian-born wife was doing well.
"She handled it beautifully," he said, according to Australia's ABC News. "Both mother and children are doing well and we are very happy."
He said his mother, Queen Margrethe II, was "totally happy" when he called her with then news.
Frederik and the former Mary Donaldson met at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and married in 2004. They have two other children, Prince Christian, 5, and Princess Isabella, 3, who are second and third in line to the throne. The new baby boy is fourth and his twin sister is fifth.
As is traditional in the royal family, the twins' names will not be announced until their christening, which should be held in about six weeks.
Frederik joked to reporters that since the twins were born on Elvis Presley's birthday, "we can call one of them Elvis for now."
Prince Christian's name reflects centuries of tradition in the Danish royal house, but there were some rumblings when Isabella's name was announced, since it is not particularly Danish.
