Report: Brad Penny, Tigers Agree to Terms

The Tigers will give Brad Penny a chance to round out their rotation, reportedly agreeing to terms with the veteran starter on a one-year deal.

Penny will make $3 million and have the opportunity to add an additional $3 million through incentives, according to ESPN.com. He made $7.5 million in 2010 while managing only nine appearances for the Cardinals, but the back problems that ended his season in May apparently are gone.

The Tigers' first four starters are set, with Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, Max Scherzer and Phil Coke. Armando Galarraga would have entered camp as the favorite for the fifth starter's job, but Penny would seem to hold that distinction now.

The 32-year-old right-hander was off to a fantastic start early last season, posing a 1.70 ERA through his first seven starts for St. Louis, before his upper back flared up. He was pounded four seven runs on 13 hits his next time out, then saw one additional start -- his last of the season, May 21 against the Angels -- end after three innings.

Aside from 24 games for the Red Sox in 2009, Penny has spent his entire 11-year career in the National League with the Marlins, Dodgers, Giants and Cardinals. He is a two-time All-Star and finished third in NL Cy Young voting in 2007 after going 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA for the Dodgers.
