Antique Grenades Used as Bookends Detonated in Florida
A police bomb squad was forced to detonate World War II-era grenades after a Florida man pulled the pin on an antique armament that had long been used as a bookend.
The DeLand resident called authorities early Jan. 11 and told them he had a bad feeling about a pineapple-style grenade given to him by a neighbor, who had used it as a bookend. The man said he had pulled the pin on the grenade -- then got freaked out and quickly stuck it back in, according to ClickOrlando.com.
"This could have been very dangerous; somebody could have lost a life," Volusia County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Ted Richards told the press. "If one of these were live and went off, we could have had multiple casualties."
The neighbor -- whose late husband was a veteran of World War II -- had reportedly used the grenade and another one like it as a bookends for years without realizing they were real.
The bomb squad detonated the grenades, leaving a 2-foot-deep crater in a nearby field.
