Durrell Summers Benched for Lack of Enthusiasm, Tom Izzo Says

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo cited co-captain Durrell Summers' lack of enthusiasm for benching the senior Saturday. Summers was benched with just under four minutes to play in regulation and he remained there through the Spartans' 71-67 overtime victory over Northwestern.

"Durrell was not feeling like he was doing anything right," Izzo said Monday. "And I don't know if he didn't want to go in, but he sure wasn't very enthused. And so, if he's not enthused, he's going to sit. If he's not enthused the next game, he's going to sit. If he's not enthused the game after, he's going to sit. If he is enthused, he's going to play. Pretty simple."

Izzo didn't seem too concerned and expects a full and enthusiastic recovery from Summers. The Spartans could use it. After losing at Penn State, they've needed overtime to beat both Wisconsin and Northwestern. They have Illinois Tuesday night and Purdue Saturday, so it won't be getting much easier.
