Chris YoungIn a continuing effort to bolster their pitching staff, the Mets will put their faith in Chris Young's ability to stay healthy -- always a tricky proposition.

The Mets have agreed to a contract with the free agent pending a physical, reports the New York Post. That physical, set for later this week, could end up being more than a formality given the myriad issues Young has had in recent years.

The 6-foot-10 right-hander has made a total of 36 starts over the last three seasons for the Padres, just four of them coming last year as he recovered from shoulder surgery. He was quite effective in two full years before that for San Diego, posting a 3.46 ERA in 31 starts in 2006 and a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts the following season, when he made the All-Star team.

Before his health went south, Young was one of the least hittable pitchers in the game, leading the majors in '06 and '07 in fewest hits allowed per nine innings. But that was a long time ago, and he has a ways to go to prove he can be effective and take the ball on a regular basis. He likely will get an incentive-laden deal with a reasonable base salary until he proves he can do so.
