Dirk Koetter Locked Down: Jaguars Denied Rams Permission to Interview Their OC
And to the surprise of some observers, they're apparently taking steps to make sure that's the case.
Although Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said during his season-ending press conference assistant coaches would be given the opportunity to interview elsewhere, the Jaguars on Tuesday denied permission to the St. Louis Rams to interview offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.
The Rams wanted to interview Koetter for their offensive coordinator position, Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union reported.
The surprising part of the Jaguars' refusal was that Del Rio had said following the season assistants would be permitted to look elsewhere because they had not had their contracts rolled over. That means they're operating on one-year deals that put them in lame-duck status.
The Rams on Tuesday hired former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator, but earlier in the day -- with negotiations with McDaniels reportedly breaking down -- they contacted the Jaguars regarding Koetter.
The Jaguars earlier this off-season granted the Broncos permission to interview Koetter for their head coaching position before former Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox took that position. The Jaguars last week signed defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to a contract, ensuring he will remain with the team next season.
