Scott HairstonThe Mets announced a pair of signings Thursday, inking one-year deals with outfielder Scott Hairston and pitcher Chris Young.

The pair were teammates last year with the Padres, and 2010 wasn't a kind season to either.

Young, 31, who has battled arm problems for the last three years pitched just 20 innings for San Diego last year, though he was 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in that limited work. Hairston, 30, meanwhile, hit .210 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI in 104 games.

Both have had their share of success in the majors, so the Mets -- who seem to be short on cash based on their lack of activity this winter -- are banking on each bouncing back.

"Chris has the potential to make a big contribution this year," said Mets GM Sandy Alderson in a statement on the Young signing.

"We were together in San Diego when he was one of the most dominating pitchers in the league and we feel he's a good fit for Citi Field."
