New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman attended WFAN's Breakfast With a Champion event on Tuesday morning, and in a question and answer session with those in attendance he pulled few punches about the future of his team. (Quotes come via espnW's Amanda Rykoff.)Cashman was particularly frank when asked whether Derek Jeter could see out his current contract at shortstop. The Yankees captain signed a three-year, $51 million deal with a player option for a fourth year last month.
"I'd be surprised if he plays shortstop for all four years (of his deal)," Cashman said. "I see him moving to the outfield."
He also admitted that the Red Sox, as currently constructed, have the upper hand on the Yankees, but added "we have a better bullpen."
Boston signed outfielder Carl Crawford and traded for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in December, while New York's most noteworthy addition so far has been former Rays closer Rafael Soriano.
"We're one starter away from being a World Series contender," Cashman said, adding that his ideal starting pitching scenario now would include the return of veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte and youngster Ivan Nova as the No. 5 starter.
