A new lawsuit claims that Taco Bell's "ground beef" should really be called "taco meat filling." That's because, the suit claims, there just isn't enough meat in the product to meet the USDA standard to call something "ground beef."
The company denies the claims, telling an Ohio news station, "Taco Bell prides itself on serving high quality Mexican inspired food with great value. We're happy that the millions of customers we serve every week agree. We deny our advertising is misleading in any way and we intend to vigorously defend the suit."
Do people really go to Taco Bell expecting high-quality meat? Perhaps not. Even with the local-food, organic movements in full swing, Taco Bell is doing pretty well. Here are some of the stats:
- 35 million customers eat at a U.S. Taco Bell each week.
- There are more than 5,000 Taco Bell restaurants across the country.
- Taco Bell serves up more than 2 billion tacos and 1 billion burritos each year.
- The chain brought in an estimated $1.9 billion in revenue in 2009, the most recent year for which info is available.
The fast-food chain is rapidly expanding overseas, too. Yo quiero "taco meat filling"?
