Reactions to the State of the Union: Missing Gun Control Message

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama paused to honor Rep. Gabrielle Giffords with wishes for her recovery, and recognize those in attendance who were affected by the shooting in Tucson, including family members of nine year old Christina Taylor Green.

At that point it would have been appropriate to propose tightening the lax gun control laws in this country that allowed a deranged individual, as Jared Loughner is said to be by those who have had contact with him, to allegedly purchase the weapons and ammunition used in the shooting.

The media has been disappointingly silent on this, and so have our political leaders, even those who have been staunch gun control advocates. It would have been fitting and proper for the president to reopen this discussion in his speech. Sadly, that did not happen.
