Teens turn to Facebook in times of joy, like announcing new relationships and posting pictures from the prom.
So it makes sense that they would use Facebook to remember classmates who die too young.
Authorities say Calyx and Beau Schenecker were killed by their mother, Julie Powers Schenecker, for backtalk. An arrest affidavit accuses Schenecker of shooting Beau, 13, while driving him home from soccer practice. She then is accused of returning home and shooting Calyx, 16, who was sitting at the computer and doing homework.
The alleged crime has shocked neighbors and members of the military community; Schenecker's husband and the teens' father is an Army officer who was stationed in the Middle East at the time of the shooting.
Now, friends and strangers alike are taking to Facebook to talk about fond memories of the young Scheneckers and what the news has meant to them. They're also using the Official Calyx & Beau Schenecker Memorial Facebook page to coordinate ways to remember the two teenagers.
So far, the page has more than 1,200 members and is helping organize little ways for the community to pay homage to Calyx and Beau -- for instance, asking people at Calyx's high school to wear "Harry Potter gear" and people at Beau's middle school to wear blue, his favorite color.
Many are using the page's wall to share memories of the Schenecker family. "I went to school with their Dad and Uncle and they were always so kind to me," one woman posted. "Seeing all that has been said and written about these two kids they shared their Dad's and Uncle's kindness. I will wear my Gryffindor hoodie and a blue shirt in their honor on Monday. You are all in my prayers."
"My family is army when I was in fourth grade I lived in Heidelberg Germany, Calyx was in my class we were good friends, the following year she moved," a teenage girl posted. "I wish we had stayed in contact. Now two amazing and wonderful children are gone to the fault of domestic violence. prayers are being said for them God bless them and other families with situations like this."
Many who never even met the Scheneckers are posting, too: "we didn't know this family, but being Army, family is family. We are lifting up them ALL up and that God will keep the father strong through out it all." Said another, "My condolences to the family of Calyx & Beau. No one deserves this! Wishing all the friends of Calyx & Beau the best in coping with their loss!"
