Punxsutawney Phil Sees an Early Spring; Twitter Scoffs at the Groundhog Day Prediction

For many of us, it's cold and snowy outside.

But the end is in sight, sayeth the soothsaying rodents: Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous groundhog, predicted an early spring when he was roused from his hole this morning. Competitor groundhogs Staten Island Chuck, Canada's Wiarton Willie and Alabama's General Beauregard Lee concur with Phil's forecast.

But not everyone on Twitter is putting away the snow shovels and breaking out the sundresses.

I'm so sad at the number of people who believe that cos Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow we're gonna have an early spring. #Failless than a minute ago via web

The groundhog predicted an early spring. Does that mean we'll only have 4 more stowstorms instead of 6?less than a minute ago via web

What a punx! Early spring???!!!!less than a minute ago via web

The groundhogs get no respect from the weather experts.

Becky, weather.com, posted Groundhog comment. Disclaimer: TWC does not NECESSARILY predict an early spring. More forecasts to come. LOLless than a minute ago via TweetDeck

Some rightfully question the groundhogs' motivation here.

Wiarton Willie predicted an early Spring but he will say anything to make us put him back in his warm house where he can sleep the snow awayless than a minute ago via web

I think these Ground Hogs need to be fired. Fat chance that it's going to be an early Spring....#GroundHogsDayless than a minute ago via ÜberTwitter

We actually sense some anger on the part of some Twitter folks.

BS hog, have you seen it outside?! RT @FOX59: #puxatonyphil says early spring!!!! he didn't see his shadow!less than a minute ago via TweetCaster

Early spring my arse. We are toast. Winter's never leaving.less than a minute ago via ÜberTwitter

Dumbazz groundhog says we'll have an early spring. I say BS! Don't think he knows we have to ski to the mailbox!!!less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Surge Desk gets a laugh out of those pointing out the patent bizarreness of listening to a groundhog on such matters.

My dog came out of her doghouse today, didn't see shadow then chased a bee and ate it. I think this means early spring, but with fewer bees.less than a minute ago via web
