The White Stripes are no more.

In a statement released via their website this afternoon, Jack White and Meg White said their band will no longer be recording or performing live. Although Jack White has been busy with his side project the Raconteurs, and although Meg White's anxiety forced a White Stripes hiatus in 2007, the band says the split was not caused by artistic differences or health concerns.

"It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way," the Whites wrote.

Surge Desk had been holding out hopes for a new White Stripes studio album (the last was 2007's "Icky Thump,") but since that's apparently not to be, let's look back at three of the band's most memorable performances.

1. 2006 Grammy Awards
In 2006, the White Stripes album "Get Behind Me Satan" won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Here's their performance from that night, complete with a typically cryptic introduction from Beck.

2. "Late Night" residency, 2003
The White Stripes were one of Conan O'Brien's favorite bands -- he appeared in their video for "The Denial Twist" and invited them to play on the last episode of "Late Night" in 2009. Several years earlier they'd done a four-night residency on the show.

3. One note in Newfoundland, 2007
During a legendary Canadian tour in 2007, the Stripes played a "secret" show in St. John's, Newfoundland. After an elaborate setup, Jack and Meg took the stage, played one note, and put down their instruments. "Now we've officially played in every province and territory in Canada," Jack said. (They went on to play a full two-hour set later in the evening.)
