KinderVision, founded in 1991, was developed by Doug Sebastian, with the assistance of law enforcement and other experts, to teach children how to be safe and avoid sexual predators. A primary part of their efforts involves developing free educational videos and other materials that are designed to be an ongoing resource for families, schools, law enforcement and youth-serving organizations.
Several years ago, Major League Baseball got involved with KinderVision, helping to provide players and resources to help educate kids and families.
"MLB totally understood the connection to kids, and so they became a wonderful partner in helping us drive our mission of protecting children, teens and young adults from sexual exploitation and abduction," Sebastian told AOL News. "They also help us gather together a real team of all-stars to make these events extra special."
At the recent KinderVision banquet, fans had an opportunity to mingle with the likes of former Dodger great Tommy Davis, former star third baseman Darrell Evans, and Baseball Hall of Fame legends Rollie Fingers and Brooks Robinson.
Fingers, who knows a thing or two about saves, given that he posted 341 of them during his 17-year career, told AOL News, "As the spokesperson for KinderVision, the national child safety education program, I usually say, 'The greatest save is the one we never have to make.' The more we can educate young people beforehand, the better they will be able to protect themselves."
Robinson, who played his entire 22-year major league career for the Baltimore Orioles, echoed the theme of the evening.
"It's fun to be here and sign autographs, but what brings us together is very important, and anything we can do as ballplayers to help get attention to helping the kids, well, I'm always happy to be a part of things like this," he said.
The banquet included an auction featuring 40 autographed Hall of Fame items, including items from 10 deceased Hall of Famers. All of the money raised will go toward helping to protect kids in Orange County.
"We have some incredible new programs designed to help protect kids," Sebastian added. "Helping to protect kids from predators is the key here."
