Peter ForsbergPeter Forsberg is returning to the NHL and will play for the Colorado Avalanche, according to the Denver Post. Forsberg is expected to sign a contract with the team soon. During his long tenure with the Colorado franchise, Forsberg won two Stanley Cup titles and led the NHL in scoring.

The 37-year-old Swede, who has been skating and practicing with the Avalanche in recent days, returns to the NHL for the first time since April 2008. Although Forsberg has been out of the NHL since then, he has played competitively in the Swedish Elite League for MODO and participated at the Vancouver Olympic Games last year.

Forsberg, who won the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Trophy in 2003, hopes to provide a spark on the offensive end for the struggling Avalanche. Colorado is vying for a playoff spot, but has looked sluggish of late -- losing four of their last five games.

He has battled a series of serious foot injuries throughout the years that prevented him from playing at full strength and returning to the NHL sooner.

The injury-plagued forward was limited to only nine games and one goal during his last NHL season with Colorado in 2007-08.

Forsberg has a rich history with the Colorado franchise. Aside from winning two Stanley Cup titles with the team, he was part of the 1992 blockbuster trade that sent Eric Lindros to Philadelphia and Forsberg to Quebec.
