Ren Hanzhi, 13, was peeling an apple when he tripped and fell on Jan. 31, jamming a nearly 8-inch knife deep into his left cheek just below his eye -- barely missing his brain and nearly puncturing the aorta.
"He was walking to the sofa while peeling the apple," said his father, according to news wire reports. "Suddenly he slipped down and his face hit onto the sharp knife.
"I dared not pull out the knife as my son was screaming."
A shocking X-ray image shows the knife stuck nearly 3 inches into his face.
Doctors were able to remove the blade and the teen, who lives in the city of Zhumadian in China's Henan province, was released from the hospital on Feb. 1.
Chief surgeon Peng Liwei called the accident "shocking," but said the boy "could recover fully in around a month."
