Bengie Molina is coming off of one of the weirder seasons in baseball history, one in which he played for the World Series runner-up Rangers, but managed to earn a World Series ring from the San Francisco Giants for playing 61 games with them in the season's first half. He's now a free agent and he told Newsday that he's considering his options for 2011, including retirement. The 36-year-old Molina is coming off of one of the worst offensive seasons in his career. In 118 games with Texas and San Francisco, he hit just .249/.267/.326.
Given that and the fact that he's a Type-A free agent, meaning that whoever signs him would have to give up a first- or second-round draft pick, it's perhaps not a huge surprise that he hasn't signed yet. He told Newsday that a couple unnamed teams have made him offers, but that they're not what he's looking for and he's unsure what he'll do.
Molina is apparently looking for a major league deal and playing time, and it's hard to believe there are many teams that would give him that at this point.
Molina had a rough time finding work last year, and now that the Rangers have moved on into the Mike Napoli and Yorvit Torrealba era, they've got no need for him. There's still time before the season starts and there will probably be some injuries, but if Molina wants to play or nothing, it may be the end of the road him.
