Mark Sanchez Not Committing a Crime, but Still Creating a Distraction
The 24-year-old star quarterback of the New York Jets now finds himself embroiled in a scandal that only adds to the team's reputation as a group of undisciplined players and coaches thanks to the allegations leveled by the 17-year-old daughter of a wealthy New Jersey family. Eliza Kruger told the gossip website Deadspin.com that she and Sanchez "hooked up" last month in his New Jersey home and she provided photos of what she claims is Sanchez's bedroom after the get-together.
"We went back to his place in Jersey after dinner. He lives on a golf course. There was a big storm," Eliza told Deadspin.com, according to that website, which identified her only as E.K. "He's a really nice guy, you know. He's one of the kindest people, and he's a genuine person."
She also revealed that after reminding Sanchez that the legal age of consent in the state of New Jersey is 16 and not 18, like Sanchez believed, they continued to exchange texts, including the night of the Jets' 24-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship.
"He would send me a text at 2 a.m. on a Wednesday asking if I was out that night," she told Deadspin. "But I'd be, like, I have school tomorrow."
Though engaging in sexual relations with someone of legal age of consent is not a criminal offense, the ramifications for Sanchez in terms of commercial endorsement deals and other paid public appearances could be significant. He just finished his second season in the NFL and has led the Jets to back-to-back appearances in the AFC Championship game, but Sanchez's play has been sporadic. The last thing he and the Jets need is another off-the-field distraction.
Meanwhile, Kruger's love affair with the spotlight might be tempered now as her mother, Marie McCormick Kruger, has stepped in.
"I don't think she wants to talk," McCormick Kruger said when reached at the family's Greenwich, Conn. home. "We're really trying to shut this down."
Unfortunately, it might be too late for that now.
