Gary Kubiak said he couldn't be happier for former Houston Texans assistant Bruce Matthews.

Matthews, who spent two seasons as an offensive assistant for the Texans, was hired by close friend and new Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak to be the Titans' new offensive line coach Wednesday.

Kubiak said he was very excited for Matthews, Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com reported Thursday.

"When we got started a couple years ago, I can remember Bruce and I having lunch at Pappasito's across the street, and he kind of wanted to get his feet wet in football," Kubiak said. "Obviously he had a storied career as a player, so (we wanted) to give him an opportunity to kind of get started here. It seemed like the further he went along, the more he really enjoyed it, and all of a sudden his best friend (new Titans head coach Mike Munchak) gets an opportunity in this league, so what an opportunity for him. We hate to lose him, but we're very, very happy for him and wish him the best."

Kubiak told Scurfield he plans to fill the vacancy.

"I've had a couple of guys in here the last two days to interview for the defensive assistant job, and actually I like them both," Kubiak said. "So I may try to even get both of them in here, but I want those guys to be able to help Joe (Marciano) with special teams. So we will fill both of those spots."
