Buoyed by record sales in 2010, Subaru of America is giving $5 million to five charities, including animal cruelty prevention, youth mentoring and environmental protection, thanks to owners of new vehicles.

Thursday's announcement makes a total of $15 million in donations over three years for the automaker, it announced in a press release.

Receiving funds are the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels Association of America and Ocean Conservancy.

This latest round of giving is the result of the company's "Share the Love" campaign, which donated $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased between Nov. 20, 2010, and Jan. 3. Customers decided how to spend the $5 million by designating one of the five nonprofits.

"We are excited to continue a program that engages our customers in giving back to the community," said Tim Mahoney, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Subaru of America.
