Kristine Casey, 61, agreed to act as a surrogate for daughter Sara Connell after Connell spent years trying to have a baby without success, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Connell and her husband, Bill, are the biological parents of the boy, Finnean Lee Connell, who was born Wednesday night. But thanks to in vitro fertilization, it was Casey who carried and gave birth to the child.
Connell told the Tribune that she held her mother's hand as Finnean was born through a Cesarean section. When she heard her son cry for the first time, the emotion overwhelmed her.
"I lost it," Sara said. "It's such a miracle."
Casey may be the oldest woman ever to give birth in Illinois.
"The emotional context of this delivery was so profound," said Dr. Susan Gerber, an obstetrician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
There have been similar cases in the past. In October 2008, Ohio woman Jaci Dalenberg, who was 56 at the time, gave birth to her triplet granddaughters. Two of the babies were identical twins.
