In seeming preparation for big things to come, CBS announced Tuesday that it will drop the word "college" from the name of its cable and satellite sports channel, starting April 4. The newly branded "CBS Sports Channel," will continue to focus on college sports, CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said in a statement. But the new name will give the channel the ability to go after non-college related properties.
The current CBS College Sports Channel, seen in 40 million homes, was launched in 2002 as the National College Sports Network by the founders of Classic Sports Network, but was quickly rebranded as College Sports Television. The channel was purchased by CBS in 2006 for $325 million and was integrated into the CBS sports operation as a 24-hour-a-day operation in 2008.
The rebranding of CBS College Sports Channel, coming on the day of the men's NCAA basketball championship, comes just ahead of what is expected to be the renaming of Versus by NBC as it consolidates its holdings under the new NBC-Comcast banner.
