A 2-year-old boy took a gun from a case in an east Texas home and accidentally shot himself in the chest, police said.

The child was expected to survive.

The incident occurred Saturday night when the toddler climbed on a stool, opened a gun case and took out a weapon belonging to his grandfather, Detective Michael Goff of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department told AOL News.

"The child crawled up on the stool, got the case, opened it up and shot himself," Goff told AOL News. "(The bullet) just went right through him."

Police have not released the child's name, but local news reports identified him as Vaughn Taylor.

The boy was rushed to a hospital in Dallas after the shooting. He underwent surgery for more than eight hours. Police said it appeared he would make a good recovery.

"It's looking good for him," Goff told AOL News. "He's out of danger now."

Goff said that at the time of the shooting, the boy was in the home with his mother. The gun case was on top of a small dividing wall between the kitchen and living room. The child climbed up to get the gun while his mother was in the kitchen.

Family friend Terrance Neid said the incident was simply a horrible accident.

"It's just an absolute tragedy, and we need to be praying for these folks," Neid told KYTX, a CBS affiliate.

Goff said the sheriff's department was investigating, but no charges have been filed.
