Farmers spent years fattening up more than 60 pigs with special feeds and other treatments before bringing them to the annual heaviest pig contest on Feb. 8, which marks the Chinese Lunar New Year.
The obese pigs are slaughtered and painted before being put on floats outside a Taoist temple. Animal rights activists have long opposed the Pig of God festival, arguing that the government shouldn't allow the public slaughter of the pigs -- let alone the years of force-feeding required to make them so gigantic.
