With polls in the Chicago mayoral election set to close at 7 p.m., the world will soon learn whether or not Emanuel will need a runoff election to be named the city's next mayor. While that question remains the only real item of business regarding when Emanuel will have his new job title, another mystery continues to surround President Barack Obama's former chief of staff.
In a nutshell, the intrigue resides on Twitter, where an as-yet-anonymous user has been operating a parody feed bearing Emanuel's name that has attracted, yes, more followers than the real one started by Chicago's next mayor.
On Monday, Emanuel was busy using the microblogging site to urge his supporters to get out the vote, firing off tweets like this one:
Remember: if you're in line at 7 you're guaranteed the right to #vote. Pass it on! #chicagomayor
Meanwhile, over at @MayorEmanuel, the satirical proprietor continued to launch a series tweets laced with expletives known to have been uttered by the real Emanuel from time to time.
While Surge Desk won't reprint the hilarious offerings, one such message read, "Sitting in the backseat of Axelrod's Civic practicing these f***ing speeches."
Perhaps the funniest thing about the dueling Twitter feeds, however, is the fact that the fake Rahm has as of this evening 32,144 followers, while the real Rahm has just 8,582. Does this mean that a runoff election is in the offing?
