Snow Heading for San Francisco, Seattle and Portland

Do cable cars have snow tires?

A major winter storm is poised to descend upon the Northwestern United States over the next two days, bringing snow as far south as San Francisco after dusting Seattle and Portland, Ore.

The Seattle area could see as much as 6 inches of snow before the Arctic air mass moves eastward. Portland can expect between 1 and 3 inches. Only trace amounts are expected to stick on the ground in San Francisco, but the hills around the Bay Area, such as Mount Tamalpias and Mount Diablo, are expected to see accumulations of the white stuff.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the sea-level snow event in the "City by the Bay" will be the first since 1976. While Portland and Seattle are much more accustomed to seeing occasional flurries, only a handful of days over the past few decades have brought snowfall totals of more than a couple of inches, the Weather Channel reported.
