The military has long had a love-hate relationship with social media, striving to take advantage of Internet tools to promote its message while also wary of an online free-for-all it can't control. Now, in an effort to extend the use of social media for recruiting, the Army today released a free iPhone app and mobile website that would allow any soldier with a smart phone to blog from anywhere.

The new blogging app, dubbed "Army Strong Stories," will allow soldiers to share videos, pictures and text from their iPhone. The mobile website is designed to work on a number of smart phones, including iPhones, BlackBerrys and Androids, among others.

In creating the app, which can be downloaded free of charge, the Army cited Nielsen research, which predicts that 50 percent of Americans will own a smart phone by the end of the year. The Army has also been making strides to equip soldiers with smart phones.

"It is to the great advantage of the U.S. Army to keep current and equip our soldiers with the latest technology to ensure they continue to share authentic stories about their daily lives in the Army," Army Lt. Gen. Benjamin Freakley said in a statement announcing the release of the app. "The Army Strong Stories iPhone app and mobile website reinforce the Army's ongoing commitment to embracing social media and new technology."

This is not the Army's first foray into social media to reach out to potential recruits. U.S. Army Recruiting has a Twitter account and a YouTube Channel, as well as Facebook and MySpace pages.
