Dustin Penner Traded to Kings
The Oilers received defenseman Colten Teubert, a first-round pick in 2011 and a conditional third-round pick from the Kings. Penner, who began his career with the Anaheim Ducks, has 21 goals and 18 assists and was one of the bigger names moved before the deadline.
"I was actually playing ping-ping with Horc (Shawn Horcoff)," joked Penner, who has a year left on his contract. "I was down so it came at a good time or I would have lost $50."
The deal ends seasons of criticism by fans and media in Edmonton. The Oilers made the unusual move of signing Penner as a restricted free agent in August 2007, meaning they had to surrender first, second and third round picks to Anaheim -- a major price to pay on top of his five-year, $21.25 million contract.
"The situation I came here with big contracts and big money also comes with big expectations," Penner said at the news conference. "If I tried to meet everybody's expectations I would drive myself clinically insane."
Earlier in the day, the Kings inked forward Justin Williams to a four-year contract extension. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
