Elegant lingerie, luggage and handbags once owned by Wallis Simpson -- the American socialite whose affair with Great Britain's King Edward VIII resulted in his abdication -- will be auctioned for charity in London, the BBC reports.

Some of the items set for the March 17 sale by Kerry Taylor Auctioneers include a 1964 Christian Dior black crocodile handbag and a scarlet chiffon nightdress.

The story of how Edward gave up his throne in 1936 to marry Simpson, a divorcee, is one of the key elements in "The King's Speech," crowned on Sunday as the year's best picture at the Academy Awards.

Actor Colin Firth took away the best actor Oscar for his amazing performance as Edward's brother, the stammer-afflicted King George VI. Last November, a Cartier bracelet previously owned by Simpson sold at a Sotheby's auction for a record-breaking $7 million.

Proceeds from the upcoming Simpson auction will go to the Dodi International Charitable Foundation, which provides medical care to children and their families in the U.S., Britain, Egypt and France.
