Charlie Sheen Twitter Account Sets Guinness Record, but Is He Doing the Tweeting?

He may have lost his twin sons, but at least Charlie Sheen has won something lately: a Guinness world record for being the person to reach 1 million Twitter followers the fastest.

A Guinness rep told Mashable that @charliesheen hit 1 million followers in just 25 hours and 17 minutes. He hit 60,000 followers before he even sent a single tweet.

Surge Desk can't help but notice, though, how adept Sheen seems to be with some of the finer points of Twitter. He's retweeting, using Twitpic, encouraging people to follow others -- all pretty advanced steps for a Twitter newbie.

Is he doing the tweeting himself? Celebrities have been known to use "ghost Twitterers" to manage their accounts.

In an interview with Ad Age, Arnie Gullov-Singh of the Internet company Ad.ly, which helped get Sheen set up on Twitter and his account verified, insisted that Sheen is the man behind the tweets. "It's absolutely him," Gullov-Sing said. He told Ad Age that his team "spent some time with him and his managers, basically saying here are some best practices: use hashtags; use Bit.ly if you're going to link to stuff; and post photos."

But not everyone's convinced. Comic Patton Oswalt caused a minor stir last night by "outing" Sheen as using a service to run his Twitter.

Hate to pee on everyone's @CharlieSheen foam party, but he's using a service. Not him. Reliable source. 'Night!less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone

This user thinks that it just doesn't sound like Sheen.

is convinced that @charliesheen isn't writing his own tweets. Uplifting hashtags such as #WINNING? #PlanBetter? Ghost motivational coach?less than a minute ago via web

Perhaps he might be getting at least a little help from Rachel Oberlin, aka Bree Olson, one of the Charlie Sheen goddesses. The film star may have "only" 142,000 followers, but she's been on Twitter a lot longer than Sheen and could be doing some consulting.

Whoever is behind his Twitter, Sheen's tweets are being followed very closely. He won't let go of the phrase "winning."

Face it folks, you just feel better when you say it. #WINNINGless than a minute ago via web

Perhaps this is a "Major League" reference?

At least he seems grateful for the Twitter support.

In all sincerity... Thank you Twitter community for the warm reception & the followers that helped get me to 1M in 24 hours!!! #teamsheenless than a minute ago via web
