Pop diva Britney Spears released her new single today, and the song, "Til the World Ends," bears some striking similarities to another hit: Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight."
Written for Spears by none other than Ke$ha, the verses to "Til the World Ends" follow a nearly identical cadence to those found in "Tonight."
As with Lady Gaga's apparent homage to Madonna on "Born This Way," Twitter users were quick to jump on the likeness between the Spears and Iglesias tracks.
Kinda sounds like Enrique's "tonight." Love it! @PerezHilton Listen 2 @britneyspears new single, Till The World Ends http://bit.ly/ghVXLd
Just heard Britney's new single-"Til the world ends"....#areyouserious .. Parts of it had the same beat as Enrique's "Tonight" #sad
Here are both songs, so that you can hear the similarities for yourself.
Enrique Iglesias "Tonight"
Britney Spears "Til the World Ends"
Does the partial similarity really matter in a genre in which a good portion of the artistic output follows a set formula and is virtually indistinguishable from its competition? Maybe not, but it's also not the first time that Spears has been accused of stealing some of Iglesias' pop thunder. In 2000, Enrique fans pointed out the striking overlap of lyrical content between two of the stars' songs.
Here's a sampling of the words to Enrique's "Maybe":
And here is a similar section in Spears' "My Love Was Always There":If I had one single wish
I'd go back to the moment
I kissed you goodbye
No matter how I try
I can't live without you in my life.
If I had just one wish
I won't ask for more than a kiss
But no matter how hard I try
I can't get you out of my mind
