We are heartbroken by the story of Wes Leonard, a high school basketball star from Michigan who collapsed on the court Thursday, just minutes after winning a game for his team, and died.
Leonard sank the winning layup in a 57-55 overtime win for his Fennville Blackhawks. The win kept Fennville's undefeated record -- 20-0 -- intact.
After he won the game, he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Watch Leonard, who wore the No. 35 jersey, in action shortly before his collapse.
Leonard was a 16-year-old junior and a local star on the basketball court, according to The Grand Rapids Press of Michigan. He had scored more than 1,000 points in his high school basketball career and also played for Fennville's football team, throwing seven TD passes in just one game. See his stats here.
In December, The Grand Rapdis Press named Leonard as a "player to watch," saying, "Every Southwestern Athletic Conference coach will tell you Fennville's Wes Leonard is the league's top dog" -- except Leonard's own coach, Ryan Klingler, who told the newspaper that he was pushing Leonard to be even better.
"He was a kind young man -- an all-American kid everybody liked. He was an outstanding athlete who also strove academically. He had aspirations to go to college," the Fennville Middle School principal told local news station WOODTV. Classmates told WOODTV that Leonard was popular, as a recent Facebook memorial page attests.
"You had an amazing athletic career, and you were the most amazing friend, I will never forget you, and how you have changed us all, I am so thankful to have been a part of your life," someone wrote on the Facebook page's wall.
The cause of Leonard's death is not yet known.
