Report: Flight Attendant Fired for Placing Toddler in Overhead Bin
Natalie Williamson says she was en route from Fiji to Sydney, Australia, with her then husband and 17-month-old son, Riley, in December when a male flight attendant lifted the tot into the plane's overhead bin and shut the door, leaving the boy in total darkness, according to the Sunday Herald Sun.
The airline said the flight attendant was playing a round of peekaboo with the baby and his father, but Williamson didn't find the game amusing. "I stood up and there were people laughing, and then I said, 'Get my son out of there now,'" she told the newspaper.
Virgin Blue said it fired the flight attendant involved and offered Williamson vouchers for free flights.
"We conducted a thorough investigation of the incident, and the staff member involved was subsequently terminated," a Virgin Blue spokeswoman told the Herald Sun. The airline did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AOL News today.
Williamson said Riley was in the bin for only about 10 seconds, but has suffered anxiety from the incident.
"He won't leave my sight now. He sleeps with me. If I'm not in the same room as him, he will scream and yell, 'Mum, mum, mum,'" she said.
