Five people were killed today when a small twin-engine plane crashed and burst into flames at California's Long Beach Airport, officials said.

Steve Yamamoto of the Long Beach Fire Department confirmed to AOL News that five of the six passengers died in the crash. The sole survivor was taken to a hospital.

The Beechcraft King Air crashed just after takeoff from Long Beach Airport at about 10:30 a.m. PDT. Moments later, the plane was engulfed in flames, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told AOL News today.

On Twitter, one witness said he watched the plane crash into a "huge fireball" after takeoff.

"I just watched a plane take off right next to me and crash in a huge fireball at long beach airport," he wrote.

The plane is owned by Thomas Fay Dean, a California developer who owns a large portion of wetlands in the Long Beach area. Dean died in the crash, his spokesman, Mike Murchison, has confirmed to AOL News.
