British Police Say Anarchists a Threat to Disrupt UK Royal Wedding

LONDON -- British police say anarchists could try to disrupt next month's royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Police commander Bob Broadhurst also said Monday that British officers may be able to tap into special police powers that would let them stop and search people on the street. He said police will be on alert for any signs of a terror threat -- despite security officials saying earlier there is no credible terror threat to the nuptials.

Broadhurst's comments came after 149 people were charged during a protest Saturday in London against government cuts.

A security barrier will be erected around Westminster Abbey for the April 29 wedding. Police say it's too soon to say whether guests will be searched.
