A Connecticut police department is celebrating a pair of siblings who saved their baby sitter's life in January.

Naida Maldonado, a former police officer, has been baby-sitting Nina Stoop, 7, and her brother Tucker, 10, their entire lives. When Maldonado had trouble breathing around dinnertime on Jan. 26, Nina knew something was wrong. She fetched Tucker, who called 911 and clearly relayed the pertinent information.

Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson of the Darien Police Department fed Tucker a series of questions: Are her eyes open? ("No. Yes. No. Sort of. Not that well.") Can she talk? ("Um, No.") Was she eating before that? ("Uh, I don't think so.")

Johnson praised Tucker, keeping him on the line. Tucker was obviously distressed and wanted to call his dad, but he stayed put as Johnson asked.

"When you listen to the chilling audio of the phone call, it is evident that Tucker is nervous but amazingly never loses composure," Sgt. Jeremiah Marron said in a statement, as reported by the Darien Patch. "The Darien Police Communications Center receives calls similar to this on a regular basis, but rarely do the callers remain unruffled."

Police and paramedics arrived and found Maldonado suffering respiratory distress. They intubated her and took her to the hospital. She is expected to fully recover. Doctors told Christina Stoop, the children's mother, that Maldonado likely would have died were it not for her children's quick actions.

The police department will bestow lifesaving awards on Tucker and Nina at a ceremony Thursday.

"Tucker and Nina Stoops are true heroes and are to be commended," Marron said.
