Seven very lucky New York state workers stepped forward today to claim their share of a $319 million Mega Millions prize, one of the state's largest lottery jackpots ever.

The winners, a group of co-workers in upstate New York, appeared at a news conference together in Albany, where they each received a check from last Friday's drawing.

The group, dubbed "The Albany Seven," has often played the lottery in an office pool over the years. But its members said they were shocked to have won this big.

"We've been playing the big jackpots for years," said Mike Barth, the member who bought the winning ticket, according to a statement released by lottery officials.

Barth said a rude customer at the Albany convenience store where he bought the winning ticket March 23 might have been a blessing in disguise.

"I was at the counter. It was my turn to buy a ticket when I reached down to grab a Snickers bar from the candy display and someone reached over me, actually cut in front of me to buy a ticket," Barth said. "I thought about saying something but decided to just let it slide. I bought the next ticket ... the winning ticket."

The seven winners, all state information-technology workers, said that when they received calls early Saturday morning from their co-workers, they initially thought their colleagues were calling to alert them about a tech-related crisis at the office.

"I got on the phone and said, 'What's wrong now?' " recalled Tracy Sussman.

The winners -- Barth, 63, John Hilton, 57, Gabrielle Mahar, 29, John Kutey, 54, Sussman, 41, Kristin Baldwin, 42, and Leon Peck, 62 -- will each receive $19.1 million after taxes.

Barth said he plans to pay for his son's college education, so he can choose a school "not based on where he can go but where he wants to go." And Kutey said he and his wife were going to visit Disney World. A lot.

"My wife and I are going to every Disney park there is!" he said.
