Pennsylvania Teen Helps Deliver Surprise Sister
With help from 911 dispatcher Shawn Pistorius, the 13-year-old boy helped his mom through the birth of his new sister. His mother didn't even know she was pregnant.
"She had told me she didn't know she was pregnant, but she thought she was having a baby," Pistorius, 42, told Pittsburgh's WTAE. He fielded the 7 a.m. call coming in from Butler County, Pa., and called back after the call disconnected. A 13-year-old boy answered the phone.
With his mom screaming in the background and his sister's head crowning, the boy remained collected as Pistorius provided instructions. He even persuaded his objecting mother to lie down.
"Went through the questions, got him to get clean towels, and it was just a couple of minutes later the baby was out," Pistorius told Pittsburgh's KDKA. "He was real calm. He did a really good job."
Pistorius did a really good job too. Though the two-time father has been a dispatcher for 18 years, he had never handled a delivery before Monday.
Pennsylvania media outlets, which say that neither the son nor the mother want to be identified, report that the mom and baby are fine.
