It seemed like a good idea at the time. That's a common theme running through so many tales of crooked capers gone ridiculously wrong. This year's top 10 stories are no exception.

The people in this rogues' gallery all had a plan, police say. But there was always a fatal flaw in their scheme that they somehow overlooked. Some, following in the tradition of the legendary "duct tape bandit," aspired to be masters of disguise – but fell laughably short. Others were tripped up by bad luck, forgetfulness or simple hunger for one last burrito before jail.
