New Headaches for Bank of America and Tiger Woods?

(Dec. 15) -- With so many news aggregators out there, who can keep up? Sphere filters the filters to steer you to the headlines that really matter.

Skip Those, Read This: The Daily Beast, The Huffington Post and The Slatest lead with news that Democrats are giving up their plan to "let people buy into Medicare beginning at age 55, and scotch even a fallback version of a new government-run health insurance plan, or public option," according to The New York Times. Why? Because of the opposition of Sen. Joe Lieberman, Democrat-turned-independent from Connecticut, who has promised to filibuster such a health care reform bill. The Times story is excellent, covering how Lieberman has flip-flopped on the relevant issues. But Monday's Politico report covered stuff today's Times' report left out, including how White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel pressured Senate Democrats to bow to Lieberman in the hopes of passing any deal, no matter how watered down.

From One Jail to Another:
The aggregators also link to news that many terrorism suspects currently detained in Guantanamo Bay will be transferred to a state prison in northwestern Illinois that will be upgraded to a federal facility. There are links to the Washington Post, New York Times and L.A. Times stories, but only The Slatest links to the Chicago Tribune story, which takes the local pulse. "For those who live in that job-starved portion of the state, this is undoubtedly very welcome news," said State Sen. Jeff Schoenberg, a Democrat from Evanston. "Even the most conservative estimates of the economic impact that this would have are considerable."

Storm Clouds in Copenhagen:
The Daily Beast alone picks up the New York Times lead story of the day, detailing the latest snag at the Copenhagen climate conference: China is refusing to accept international monitoring of its emissions levels, which the United States believes must be a condition of any deal.

Catch of the Day: The Daily Beast and Newser deserve kudos for linking to this fascinating Associated Press story from afar. Australian scientists have discovered an octopus that collects coconuts for shelter. The report says researchers believe this "unusually sophisticated behavior ... is the first evidence of tool use in an invertebrate animal." Cool!

Business as Usual: This morning was a really strong one for The Daily Beast, as it's the only aggregator to carry this Wall Street Journal story (subscription required) on Bank of America's inability to snag its top CEO candidate, Robert Kelly, who is currently the CEO of Bank of New York Mellon Corp. Kelly apparently didn't get the memo about Main Street disgust with Wall Street in the wake of the financial crisis. He was asking to be paid than $20 million a year and wanted to move the Charlotte-based bank's headquarters to New York. No deal, Bank of America said.

Tiger Watch:
A non-sex-related whiff of potential scandal for the golfer, again flagged by The Daily Beast: According to a New York Daily News story, Canadian authorities are expected to press charges this week against Anthony Galea, a Canadian doctor caught holding human-growth hormone and other illegal drugs. His former patients include, yes, Woods, as well as U.S. Olympic swimmer Dana Torres, each of whom deny using illegal drugs.
