Beryl threatens rain, winds on southeast US coast
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Subtropical storm Beryl crept Sunday toward the Southeast U.S. coastline, threatening to churn up dangerous surf and drenching rains for a soggy close to the long Memorial Day weekend along beaches from northeast Florida to South Carolina. Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center. Forecasters at the center in Miami said the cluster of thunderstorms was expected to make landfall sometime Sunday night or Monday in the region.

NEW YORK (AP) — When police dug up a Manhattan basement last month in a fruitless search for the remains of Etan Patz, a 6-year-old boy who disappeared in 1979, Lucy Suarez saw the news on TV and wished that the family of the missing child would finally get some peace. Woman shot by homeowner faces trespassing charge
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A 21-year-old woman who was shot in the hip by a Colorado homeowner after police said she drunkenly wandered into a house now faces a felony trespassing charge, prosecutors said. Zoey Ripple, who graduated from the University of Colorado earlier this month, entered a couple's Boulder home through an unlocked door at around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A famed battleship that saw action during World War II and the Korean War and carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to a wartime summit traveled along the California coast Sunday on its final voyage. The iconic USS Iowa left San Francisco Bay on its way to its new home in Southern California.
W.Va. police find 4 bodies in wooded area
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State Police said late Saturday they had found four bodies in a wooded area and believe they are those of a missing man, his girlfriend and his two young children. Police said in a news release that the bodies were found about a mile from where the man's missing 2003 Chevy Venture van was discovered Friday night near Carl, in Nicholas County. Police suspected foul play based on the vehicle's condition.
New Mexico fire grows, forces evacuation
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A wildfire in Gila National Forest burned through more timber and brush lands as it forced the evacuation of residents living near a privately owned ghost town in southwestern New Mexico, officials said. Fueled by strong, erratic winds, the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire burning through rugged and remote terrain grew Saturday to an estimated 100,000 acres, or more than 150 square miles. It was still 0 percent contained.
Small plane sinks in San Diego Bay, 2 survives
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The pilot and passenger of a banner-towing plane made an emergency landing on San Diego Bay and were plucked out of the water before the aircraft sank, authorities said Saturday. The pilot of the single-engine Cessna 150 reported engine problems and went in the water south of the Coronado Bay Bridge around 4:20 p.m., FAA spokesman Ian Gregory said.
