Health Benefits Set to Expire for Laid-Off

WASHINGTON (Dec. 1) -- An auto parts employee laid off from his job last year has been able to hang onto his health insurance because the federal government has picked up most of the tab. That subsidy ends Tuesday for Don Hall and thousands of other Americans.

A provision in the stimulus bill that helps cover the cost of COBRA insurance for workers laid-off during the recession is set to expire. The plan cut health care costs by 65 percent for workers who recently lost their job, but it will end on Dec. 31. Without the government assistance, tens of thousands more Americans may lose their health insurance.
